User research is important for understanding your users better. There are a few different approaches you could take — you might do interviews, surveys, usability testing, or a combination. Each has pros and cons depending on what you're trying to learn. You'll want to recruit participants, create materials, collect data, and analyze findings. The exact workflow depends on your research goals and timeline. What specific questions are you hoping to answer with this research?

CS UX RESEARCHER WORKFLOW

PHASE 1: RESEARCH PLANNING (1 week)
• Define 3-5 core questions: "How do users currently solve this problem?" "Where do they get stuck?"
• Choose method: Moderated interviews (depth), unmoderated surveys (scale), or usability test (behavior)
• Set sample size: 8-12 users for interviews (saturation), 50+ for surveys
• Create recruitment screener: who is your target user? (role, company size, use case)

PHASE 2: MATERIALS (1 week)
• Interview guide: 8-10 open-ended questions, not leading. Start broad (current workflow) then narrow (your feature).
• Prototype or mockup: if testing a feature, build clickable version. Don't show production code.
• Consent form: document that recordings/data will not be shared publicly

PHASE 3: EXECUTION (2-3 weeks)
• Schedule 1-hour sessions, 30 min buffer between each
• Record video + audio (with consent)
• Take live notes on key quotes and moments
• Debrief immediately after: What surprised you? What confirmed your hypothesis?

PHASE 4: ANALYSIS (1 week)
• Code responses: Tag recurring themes, pain points, workarounds
• Build affinity map: Group themes into insights (3-5 major findings)
• Create persona or use case summary from 1-2 representative users

PHASE 5: REPORT (3 days)
• Highlight 3 key insights with supporting quotes
• Map to product roadmap: which feature requests address these findings?
• Share video clips (with permission) — seeing real users is persuasive
