To win featured snippets, you need to optimize your content for how Google returns answers. That means having clear, concise answers to common questions, using structured formatting, and making sure your content is better than what's currently ranking. You should look at which queries already show featured snippets in your niche, then write content that's more direct and specific. Good formatting, short paragraphs, and bulleted lists all help. But it's not an exact science — Google's algorithm for snippets changes, and you might need to experiment.

FEATURED SNIPPET OPTIMIZATION FRAMEWORK

STEP 1: FIND OPPORTUNITY KEYWORDS (This week)
Search in Google: "how to set up databases", "what is indexing", "PostgreSQL vs MySQL"
Check: Does a featured snippet already appear? (Cyan box at top)
→ YES: These are snippet-bait keywords. Your post can steal the snippet.
→ NO: Opportunity exists but Google hasn't found a good answer yet.

EXAMPLE: Search "how to set up PostgreSQL replication"
Current snippet (from competitor): 3 bullet points in cyan box
Opportunity: Their snippet is weak (missing step 4). You can win it with a better one.

STEP 2: STRUCTURE YOUR ANSWER FOR EXTRACTION (Write)
Google favors three snippet formats. Pick ONE per section:

FORMAT 1: DEFINITION (0-60 words)
Used for: "What is X?"
Structure:
Topic Name: Single concise definition
Context: One to two supporting sentences

EXAMPLE:
PostgreSQL Replication: the process of copying database changes from a primary server to one or more read-only replicas in real time. Replication allows horizontal scaling of read workloads without impacting the primary database.

FORMAT 2: LISTICLE / STEPS (5-9 items, 6-8 words per item)
Used for: "How to X?"
Structure:
1. Action verb plus target object
2. Action verb plus target object
... up to 9 items

EXAMPLE:
How to Set Up PostgreSQL Replication
1. Create a replication user on the primary server
2. Enable WAL archiving in postgresql.conf
3. Set max_wal_senders to 5 or higher
4. Configure pg_hba.conf to allow replication
5. Create a base backup using pg_basebackup
6. Configure the replica's recovery.conf
7. Start the replica server
← 7 steps, 5-8 words each. Scannable. Extractable.

FORMAT 3: COMPARISON TABLE (3-4 columns, 3-5 rows)
Used for: Feature comparisons like "Option A vs Option B"
Structure:
| Feature | Option A | Option B |
| — | — | — |
| Key metric | Value 1 | Value 2 |

EXAMPLE:
| Metric | Streaming Replication | WAL Archiving |
| — | — | — |
| Latency | < 1s | Hours to days |
| Setup complexity | Moderate | Complex |
| Failure recovery | Automatic | Manual |

STEP 3: PLACEMENT IN YOUR POST (Above-fold)
Put your snippet-optimized section in the first 200 words of the post.
Why: Google crawls the top 200 words first. If your answer lives there, it's more likely to be extracted.

STEP 4: FORMATTING FOR CRAWLER PARSING
Use HTML semantic tags so Google knows what it's reading:
• <h2>: Section heading ("How to Set Up PostgreSQL Replication")
• <ol> or <ul>: Ordered or unordered lists
• <table>: Comparison tables
• <p>: Paragraphs (keep to 2-3 sentences per paragraph)

DO NOT:
• Use images to convey the answer (Google can't read images in snippets)
• Put answer in a collapsible section (Google won't extract hidden content)
• Use weird symbols or formatting (breaks parsing)

STEP 5: HEADER DEPTH (Critical)
Snippet questions usually match <h2> headers. If your post uses <h3> for everything, Google can't match.
Structure your headers like:
• <h1>: Post title
• <h2>: Question sections ("How to...", "What is...")
• <h3>: Sub-points under h2

STEP 6: WORD COUNT PER SNIPPET TYPE
Definition snippet: 50-60 words (single paragraph)
List snippet: 50-100 words total (including all items)
Table snippet: 3 columns, 4 rows, < 5 words per cell
← Keep snippet-optimized sections tight. Long answers don't get extracted.

STEP 7: CLAIM YOUR SNIPPET (After publish)
Wait 1-2 weeks for Google to crawl.
Search your target keyword.
If snippet appears: You're done.
If NO snippet: Your post ranked but wasn't selected. Reasons:
• Your answer was too long (trim to 60-90 words)
• Formatting was unclear (reformat as <ol> or <table>)
• Header didn't match query exactly (rename <h2> to match search query)

TEST & ITERATE
Monitor via Google Search Console: Search Analytics → Queries → Filter for "Position 1-3"
← Posts showing position 1 with high impressions are snippet candidates.
